The Salt Gang Story

Hey! We’re Lucy and Thomas, long term lovers of each other, good food, and hanging out a lot. We make a big beautiful range of chilli crisps, fermented honeys, chilli oils and umami sauces here in Adelaide.

When COVID doomed our big move to Vietnam only a few months in, we landed back in Australia at Lucy’s childhood home. A bit sad, more than a bit lost, and determined to spend as much of our time together as possible, we started dreaming up a different way to live.

We’ve been together for almost 10 years, and cooking and eating together has always been our favourite thing. We’ve built many backyard charcoal grills, learnt the intricacies of growing our own koji, brewed niche styles of beer, and fermented everything in sight. Obsessed with food and food history, we were always on the hunt for new tastes and techniques. Our myriad housemates over the years were fed our fermented honey and early prototypes of our crispy chilli oils (you can only buy so much Lao Gan Ma before you start getting curious about making your own!), and we almost always had a friend or two dropping in for dinner.

We were never chefs, but always knew you don’t have to be to make incredible food for the people you love.

So in early 2021 we started Salt Gang, a little market stall selling chilli crisps and strange sauces to baffled but generous locals. This is now our full time job, and we still make everything the same way. Small batch, handmade, and built to turn everyday food into something to look forward to.

We’ve been able to expand our little team and now also have Charlie, sibling extraordinaire of Lucy and dedicated culinary explorer working with us!

We’ve spent our lives together reading about, talking about, and arguing about the finer details of flavour. We’re now spending hours in the kitchen creating flavour bombs so you don’t have to.
